Lack of Energy

This is cross posted at my other blog blog.262quest.com

No, I am not making the statement because I am confused why, I am making the statement just because I am tired. I have a terrible lack of energy.

This morning I was at the gym and just couldn't seem to get much done. I started to lift my normal routine and just couldn't seem to get through it. I finally gave up and went and walked on the treadmill to try to awaken my body. I went back to the weights and after just one more set gave up and came home.

This week my runs have also been tiresome with lack of energy as well. I originally figured that I was seeing the results of pushing my body so hard in my half marathon this past week, but figured that would be subsiding by now.

Like I said, it is no surprise that I have no energy. I have been getting up and 4:05 AM each morning, running or working out, going to work and working 9 and 10 hour days, coming home, taking care of some household business (running the kids here or there) and then working 2 - 4 more hours before going to bed between 10:30 and 11:00. All to do it all over the next day.

Now, many of you might laugh at me and say "You call that work?" I am an Application Developer so yes, work for me is sitting in front of the computer all day. Not much of a physical activity, but unless you have worked in front of the computer all day, you would never understand how physically draining it is. I am sure the mental part of it is what drains you physically, but it is tiring none the less.

I have a hugh project that is coming due, that I have a lot of work left on. I had a mini due date this past Tuesday, then another bigger due date today. I have one of the main due dates on Monday which is going to be tough, and then it is roll out of the application from there. All while continuing to work on back end stuff. To say the least I am stressed.

To add to all this, I think my body is reacting from a weight loss standpoint. I have not seen any weight loss over the past couple weeks while I have been going through all this. I am not eating as good as I could be, but I am not eating bad enough that I shouldn't be losing weight either. I think it is my body just telling me that I am not getting enough rest. I wish I could respond to it and give it the rest it needs, but it will have to wait till after these deadlines.

New badge at work

Just this past week our company issued new picture badges. I have been looking forward to this day. My old badge was about 6 years old. I wasn't at my heaviest back then, but I still love to see the change!

The first signs of normal

OK, I know that BMI is not the greatest form of measurement for weight loss and fitness success, but it is out there and screaming at us all the time. This makes it very hard to ignore. I don't tend to worship at the alter of the great BMI, but I do watch it. If you look at my weekly stats, I list both BMI and what the caliper says. I know that most people would trust the caliper over the BMI, but I am not sure how accurate I am with the caliper.

Here is where I get to the first signs of normal. According to the BMI charts, when I started in January of 2007 I was obese with a BMI of 38.1. I celebrated when I finally became overweight at 29.9. I now am inching in on the normal range of 24.9 with a current BMI of 25.8.

Monday morning when I was doing my stats I went to enter my weight on www.skinnyr.com for the chart that shows up at the bottom of my blog. I think their calculations are off a little bit, but was I ever excited when I saw that they had my BMI showing normal. You can see in the image to the right that it shows normal. Now, I know according to the official BMI I am not normal until 24.9, but for someone to think I am normal makes me very happy! Thanks Skinnyr!

Eating with friends

So many times I find it funny how much a lack of self control I have when eating with friends. I am not sure what all causes this, but it can be very frustrating.

Last night we went to a new restaurant with friends and my wife and I shared a meal. This is usually a great thing, and I do really well. I guess last night was a little different because I really wanted fish, but my wife will not eat fish. For both cost and meal size reasons we always share a meal now, so I knew I was not going to eat fish. That being the case I was already a little grouchy. That coupled with the fact that they brought us out a small spinach thing as an appetizer on the house, and then I must of looked hungry because our waiter brought me out a cup of Clam Chowder on the house as well. By the time our meal came out I had already had enough to eat, but of course it looked really good so I went ahead and ate my portion. We did have some left over, which was good, but I still ate entirely too much.

So, why do we tend to eat more when we are with friends? I don't generally eat too much when we go out to dinner as just a family, but that all changes when we are out with friends.

I think for me there are multiple reasons.
  1. We generally eat later because of everyone's schedule.
  2. The conversation or whatever is going on distracts me from being sensible.
  3. We go places we may not normally go.
  4. We actually go to a restaurant, which we do very little of.
I am sure there are other reasons, but these are the ones that come to mind. The most important thing for me is to not get down on myself and bounce back immediately, which is what I do. This is not always easy, but I have to remember there will be times that I make bad decisions and it doesn't need to stand in the way of being social. I am getting better all the time just because of my lifestyle change, so I know I am moving in the right direction.

So, what are some of the things that cause you to overdo it? And, is it difficult for you to bounce back, or do you bounce right back immediately?

Mid Week Check In

I really don't have much to say but I figured I would check in. This week has been going good for the most part. The weight is doing good and the eating is going good as well.

I have only run one day this week because I have been kinda fighting a cold. Since my Half Marathon is in just 9 short days I was really concerned about this cold so I took a few days off from running and slept in an additional hour. I added some nose spray, some Mucinex, and some vitamins, and it looks like I was able to get rid of it just as fast as it came. I am feeling really quite well, and it is still over a week till race day.

I was reading Dave's Blog, The Diary of The Fat Man and noticed he had posted some shirtless pics of himself. He is quite brave. I have not yet been that brave and I am down over 80 lbs. I am going to take the hint and soon I am going to post my first pic without a shirt. I think it is the way to go now, because it is now getting very hard to show progress with the shirt still on. I promise to leave the rest of my clothes on no matter how hard it gets to show progress!

January Stats and some pics

I just figured I would quickly post a couple pictures and the stats for January.

December 2007 - February 1st, 2008

On January 1st I weighed 181 (avg weight) and today I weighed 177 (avg weight) for a loss of 4 lbs. My actual scale weight on January 1st was 179.2 and todays actual was 174.4 for the actual weight loss to stand at 4.8. I have not been faithful till lately to measure so that will not be posted on the monthly stats. I officially hit my 80 lb loss during the month of January, and also ran 80 miles for the first time in the month of January.

Wow - nice drop!

Last week was a slow week for me as I didn't see my average go down by even one pound. However, this week mid week I saw I nice drop in scale weight of 5 lbs in one day, which the next day and every day since has settled with a 3 lb loss.

I am down 3 lbs from just a few days ago and it is holding steady. If this continues to hold I will be posting at least a 2 lb loss this week.
